Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden
At Torquay College, our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program provides Grade 5/6 students with rich, hands-on learning experiences that connect gardening, cooking and healthy living.
Through this program, students actively participate in growing, harvesting and preparing fresh produce, developing practical life skills while deepening their understanding of food systems, sustainability and nutrition.
The program encourages teamwork, responsibility and independence as students work collaboratively in the garden and kitchen, building confidence and a sense of pride in their achievements.
It supports curriculum links across Science, Health and Design Technologies, while also promoting positive attitudes towards healthy eating and environmental sustainability.
Complementing this program is our Tier 3 Social Skills Cooking Group, held each Friday, which provides targeted support for students requiring additional assistance in developing communication, collaboration and self-regulation skills.
In this supportive and structured setting, students learn social problem-solving, turn-taking and emotional regulation through shared cooking experiences.
The group offers a safe, inclusive environment where students build strong peer connections while working towards individual wellbeing goals.
Together, these programs reflect Torquay College’s commitment to inclusive practice, student wellbeing and empowering learners with the skills they need for life beyond the classroom.
