Numeracy

At Torquay College, we use explicit mathematics instruction to ensure every student develops strong, confident and lasting mathematical understanding.
This approach is grounded in evidence-based teaching practices and provides students with clear, structured learning experiences.

Explicit instruction involves teachers breaking down concepts into manageable steps, modelling strategies clearly, and guiding students through purposeful practice.
The lesson structure includes:

    • fluency (recall and application of number facts, procedures and routines quickly).
    • daily review (previously taught concepts and skills).
    • explicit teaching (teacher explicitly modelling the concept and skills).
    • guided practice (students participating while being guided by the teacher).
    • independent practice (a skill based, concept based problem to provide evidence of learning.

The mathematics lessons are very scaffolded, ensuring students have opportunities to watch the teacher model, participate while being heavily guided by the teacher and then participate in an independent activity.

Teachers use a mixture of resources to help plan for the maths lessons.
These include Ochre Education (years Foundation and 3-6) and Prime (years 1 and 2).
