STEAM
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics)
The STEAM program at Torquay College from Foundation to Year 6 is designed to develop curiosity, problem-solving and creativity, while embedding respect for First Nations peoples, knowledge systems, and connections to Country.
Aligned with the Victorian Curriculum, students explore scientific and technological concepts through learning experiences that highlight Aboriginal knowledge of land, seasons, flora and fauna.
Students investigate local environments, study native plants and animals, and learn how First Nations peoples have used observation, sustainability, and innovation to care for Country over tens of thousands of years.
Through hands-on inquiry, students design, build, test and refine solutions using engineering and design processes.
Learning experiences are explicitly taught and carefully scaffolded, then extended through creative and collaborative tasks where students apply their knowledge to real-world and local contexts.
The Arts are integrated to support storytelling, design, and communication, allowing students to express understanding through visual, digital, and creative forms.
Throughout the program, students are encouraged to think critically about sustainability, environmental responsibility, and the importance of diverse ways of knowing.
STEAM at Torquay College supports student agency by empowering learners to ask questions, explore ideas, and develop a deeper understanding of the world, grounded in respect for Aboriginal perspectives, culture, and connection to Country.
